Yellowknife, Canada, is the largest city as well as the capital of the Northwest Territories in Canada. It is on the north shore of the Great Slave Lake, 250 miles south of the Arctic Circle. It takes its name from the nearby Yellowknife Bay, which is itself near the Yellowknife River. The city, the bay, and the river are all named in honor of the Dene tribe which was once known as the Copper Indians, and referred to locally as the Yellowknives Dene.
