Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum, better known as Ayn Rand (February 2, 1905 - March 6, 1982) was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia. She is best known as a philosopher an novelist, having written "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged," and developed the philosopical system called Objectivism. She moved to the United States in 1926 and published "Atlas Shrugged" in 1957. After that, she focused on nonfiction, mostly writing about Objectivism and reason. She was an avowed atheist and a philosophical leader to the libertarian movement. She married actor Frank O'Connor in 1929, and she became an American citizen April of 1929. She and Frank remained married until his death in 1979. Ayn died of heart failure at her home.
