The 35th President of the United States John Fitzgerald Kennedy (May 29, 1917 - November 22, 1963) was known to most Americans as either Jack Kennedy or JFK. He was President from January 1961 until he was assassinated in November 1963. Although his tenure was short, his time in the White House was eventful. He presided over the country during the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the American Civil Rights Movement, the erection of the Berlin Wall, and the beginning of the Vietnam War. He also initiated the so-called space race, vowing to land an American on the moon. He was murdered in Dallas Texas by Lee Harvey Oswald, who was arrested almost immediately. Two days later, as the police were transferring him to the county jail, while in the basement of the Dallas Police Department, he was shot and killed by a night club owner named Jack Ruby. This shooting was caught on camera, and the entire American public watched live as the assassin was murdered.
