American rock band Grateful Dead was founded in Palo Alto, California in 1965. Known for its eclectic style, which is a fusion of rock. bluegrass, folk, blues, and reggae with a bit of jazz and psychedelic rock, the founding band members included Jerry Garcia, Ron "Pigpen" MeKernan, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzman. Except for Pigpen, who died in 1973, the band was together for the entire 30 years that the band was in existence. Other long-term members of the Dead included Mickey Hart, Keith and Donna Godchaux, Vince Welnick, and Brent Mydland. Deadheads, which are what their fans are called, are among the most avidly loyal fans in musical history. Jerry Garcia died in the summer of 1995 of a heart attack, and the remaining band members decided to officially disband.
