The rapper, song writer and actor known as Eminem, and sometimes as Slim Shady, was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri. His parents were in a band together. They split up when Eminem was young. After that, he and his mother moved quite a bit, eventually settling in Warren, Michigan when he was eleven. He was described by people who knew him as a happy child, though he tended to be a loner and was bullied at school. He began to rap at age 14, and he dropped out of school at 17, after remaining in 9th grade for three years because of bad grades and his constant truancy. He was moderately successful in 1996, and his success grew each year. In early 1999, he recorded The Slim Shady LP, which went triple platinum before the year was up. His mother sued him for $20 million after she said he slandered her in the lyrics of one of the songs on the album. She ended up with $1,600 in damages two years later. Eminem and Kim Scott, a runaway his mother had taken in along with her twin sister, when they were young teenagers, had a daughter Hailie on Christmas of 1995. They were married in 1999 and divorced in 2001. They remarried in January of 2006 but he filed for divorce in April of that same year. Kim sued him in 2000 for defamation due to his lyrics in his song "Kim" which described her violent death.
