Frank James Cooper, known as Gary Cooper (May 7, 1901 - May 13, 1961) was an early movie star, from 1925 until just before he died. He starred in more than 100 movies, including westerns as well as dramatic movies and comedies. Born in Helena, Montana to British immigrants. His father was a farmer who later became an attorney and then a judge. He moved to Los Angeles with his parents in 1924, but he was unable to find a job which would sustain him, until he found work as an extra in 1925. He changes name that year and his career took off. He had well-publicized relationships with leading ladies of the day, Clara Bow and Lupe Velez as well as the Countess Carla Dentice di Frasso, the so-called socialite-spy before marrying Veronica Balfe on December 15, 1933, and they had one daughter, Maria. He continued to have relationships with famous women after his marriage, notably Marlene Dietrich, Tallulah Bankhead, Grace Kelly, and Patricia Neal. The affair with Neal was quite public, and he continued to see her even after his wife found out. He and his wife separated in May of 1951. They were reconciled in 1954. He died of metastasized prostate cancer.
