Sir Eric Clapton, British guitarist, songwriter, and singer, was born in Ripley, Surrey, England to Patricia Clapton, a 16 year old, and a 25 year old soldier from Quebec on March 30, 1945. He was raised by his grandmother and her husband, and believed that they were his parents and that his mother was his sister. Early on, he was inspired by blues music and he practiced on his guitar for hours in order to learn to play. When he was 16, he and a friend, David Brock, played a duo in the pubs around Surrey, and at 17, he joined a rhythm & blues band called the Roosters. He left them to join the Yardbirds in October of 1963, and in April of 1965, he joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Finally, in 1966, he joined Cream. Later, he would be in Blind Faith as well as Delaney and Bonnie and Friends. He has also had a solo career and been in the famous Derek and the Dominos. He has struggled with his recovery from heroin addiction followed by drinking problems.
