James Cagney (July 17, 1899 - March 30, 1986) was a dancer and actor who is best known for his performances in "The Public Enemy," "Angels with Dirty Faces," and "Yankee Doodle Dandy," where he played George M. Cohan. He was born on the lower east side of ManhattanHe graduated from high school in 1918 and went off to college, but he had to return home after the first semester when his father died of the flu during the epidemic. He met Frances "Billie" Vernon in 1920, and they were married in 1922. They adopted two children, a boy and a girl in the 1940s. He remained married to he died in 1986. He died on his 120-acre farm in Stanfordville, New York, on Easter Sunday of that year. His eulogy was given by his good friend, President Ronald Reagan, and his pallbearers included Mikhail Baryshnikov and Floyd Patterson.
