Born Arthur William Bell, III on June 17, 1945, American broadcaster and author Art Bell is known as the father of paranormal overnight radio. The Vietnam vet went to Japan after his separation from the Air Force, and while there he made it into the Guinness Bo of World Records by staying on air for 116 hours and 15 minutes. He went from being a rock disc jockey to hosting a political talk radio show called West Coast AM in 1978. In 1988, the show was named Coast to Coast AM, though his fans frequently called it "The Art Bell Show." He eventually switched from conventional political talk to conspiracy theories and gun control issues as he switched to the Libertarian Party. After the Oklahoma City bombing, the show shifted further into the paranormal, UFOs, time travel, and pseudoscience, and he was a pioneer in that genre. He has retired several times and come back each time to his adoring fans.
