James Paul McCartney, known as Paul McCartney or simply "Paul," was born in Liverpool on June 18, 1942. His mother, a midwife, died suddenly of an embolism when Paul was 14, and it affected him immensely. His father was a pianist and trumpet player who was the leader of Jim Mac's Jazz Band long before Paul was born; he encouraged Paul and his brother, Michael, in their musical endeavor. After the breakup of the Beatles, Paul founded Wings and embarked on a solo career. He has several houses in the United Kingdom, including one in East Sussex, England, and a farm in Scotland, as well as a ranch in the American state of Arizona.
