The city of Sheridan, Wyoming, which is the seat of Sheridan County, was named in honor of Union General Philip Sheridan, who led the Calvary Corps of the Army of the Potomac, defeated the Confederate Army in the Shenandoah Valley, and supervised The Burning of that valley, becoming one of the first people to use the so-called scorched earth tactic. His calvary was also instrumental in Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.
