The city of Lander, Wyoming is the county seat of Fremont County. It is situated in central Wyoming south of the Wind River Indian Reservation and is a tourist attraction which contains numerous dude ranches. It is named in honor of explorer Frederick W. Lander, a general in the Union Army, prolific poet, and transcontinental explorer. Before being named Lander, it was Pushroot, Fort Brown, and finally Fort Auger. Lander is famous for being the location of the first rodeo, a tradition which has continued to this day, being held on the Fourth of July weekend.
