The county seat of Racine County, Wisconsin is the city of Racine, which is situated along the shore of Lake Michigan where the Root River empties into the lake. The word “racine” is the French word for “root.”It is the home to the first garbage disposal, the InSinkErator as well as malted milk balls. It was settled by Yankees just after the Blackhawk War and was well-known throughout the nation for its abolitionist views and the fact that the Underground Railroad passed through the city. In 1854, Racine was the center of a Supreme Court case called “The Fugitive Slave Law,” which dictated that runaway slaves had to be returned to their masters. Wisconsin nullified the law, declaring it unconstitutional and refusing to recognize the US Supreme Court’s authority.
