Madison, Wisconsin is the capital city and seat of Dane County. In 1829, former federal judge James Doty bought more than a thousand acres of woods and swampland, intending to build a city there. In 1836, the Wisconsin Territory was created and he lobbied to get his land designated the capital of the territory. He won and named the city in honor of former President James Madison, and he named the streets after the other signers of the Constitution.
