Fond du Lac, Wisconsin is the seat of Fond du Lac County at the south end of Lake Winnebago. “Fond du lac” literally means “foot of the lake.” Originally inhabited by the Winnebagos, Kickapoo, and Potawatomi, the area was bought by a federal judge named James Doty and his business partners. In 1835, Military Ridge Road began construction, connecting Wisconsin and Fort Dearborn, Illinois and passing right through Fond du Lac. The primary businesses were milling and logging. The town of Fond du Lac contains most of the city.
