Located in Rock County, Beloit is in southern Wisconsin. Its founders were British Puritans, who were the early settlers of New England who had migrated west to find places to farm. There were no people living in the region when they arrived in the early 19th century. They built roads and government buildings as well as their farms. Originally named Albany, in honor of Albany, Vermont, its name was changed to Beloit in 1938. The origin of its name is up in the air. The city of Beloit is both adjacent to and partially within the town of Beloit.
