Although it is the county seat of Ohio County, Wheeling, West Virginia is also located i Marshall County. It is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains along the Ohio River. It was the first state capital of West Virginia and has been a manufacturing center in the 19th century due to its location as a transportation hub. It as settled in 1770 and called Zanesburg, after the founder and landowner Ebenezer Zane. In 1793, divided the town up into lots and Wheeling was founded on one of those lots. It became a town in 1795. In 1861, the Wheeling Convention was held in town. The Wheeling Convention was called by those who objected to Virginia’s move to secede from the Union and it eventually led to a Constitutional Convention and the establishment of West Virginia as a state.
