Shepherdstown, West Virginia, is located in Jefferson County on the banks of the Potomac River. It was settled by colonists who were moving west. The Colony of Virginia issued a land grant of 222 acres to Thomas Shepherd in what is now known locally as the Town Run. Shepherd used 50 of those acres to lay out the town, which he named Mecklenburg, and it was chartered by Colonial Virginia’s General Assembly in 1762. The town was later enlarged by more of Shepherd’s land and the name was changed to Shepherd’s Town in 1798. It was finally named Shepherdstown after the Civil War.
