Situated in Jefferson County, West Virginia, the town of Harpers Ferry is famous, or perhaps infamous, for John Brown’s raid on the armory in 1959. Robert Harper, an English colonist, was given 125 acres where the town now sits, upon which he established a ferry service which toted people across the Potomac. In 1763, the Virginia General Assembly established the town, which it named “Shenandoah Falls at Mr. Harper’s Ferry.”
