Walla Walla, Washington is the county seat of Walla Walla County. It was platted in 1859 and incorporated in 1862. Although it is home to the Whitman College and Walla Walla Community College, it is best knows for being the location of the Washington State Penitentiary. In 1836, Christian missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman arrived with the goal of converting the local tribe. Shortly after their arrival, an outbreak of measles overtook the Cayuse people, killing large numbers, including a almost half of the tribe, and just about every one of their children. The Cayuse thought that the Whitmans were responsible for the deaths, and the Whitmans were killed, along with 12 other white settlers. Additionally, they took 53 women and children captive for several months. The local college, Whitman College, is named after the missionaries.
