Spokane, Washington, is the county seat of Spokane County. The first European settlement was established in 1810 by David Thompson, a Canadian fur trader, cartographer, and surveyor. It was known as Spokan Falls and changed to Spokane in 1881. The word Spokane was the name of the Indian tribe in the area, and it means “children of the sun” in Salishan.
