The county seat of the state of Washington’s King County, Seattle, was first visited by explorer George Vancouver in 1792 as he went through the area to chart the Pacific Northwest. It was not, however, until 1851 when settlers began to move in. They named the village Duwamps. It was later named Seattle, after Chief Seattle of the Dumwamish tribe.
