Situated in King County, the city of Redmond, Washington, is a suburb of Seattle. A Homestead Act claim was filed by Luke McRedmond in 1870, who called it Salmonberg. The post office was established in 1881, at which time the name of the settlement was changed to Melrose, after one of McRedmond’s neighbors’ nearby inn, Melrose House. An unhappy McRedmond became postmaster in 1883 and renamed it Redmond. The city is probably best known as the home of Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo.
