The county seat of Clallam County, Washington is Port Angeles. When the Spanish explorer Francisco de Eliza came through the area in 1791, he named the harbor “Puerto de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles,” which is Spanish for “the Port of Our Lady of the Angels.” The city is the site of the largest prehistoric Indian village and burial ground in the United States, which was established in 2003, when a construction crew discovered a grave site. Eventually, more than 300 graves were found, along with 785 pieces of human bones and numerous artifacts, some of which are thought to have been between 1,700 and 2,700 years old.
