Olympia, Washington, is the county seat of Thurston County and the state capital. In 1848, Edmund Sylvester and Levi Smith claimed the land which would become downtown Olympia. The town’s population grew, largely due to the Oregon Trail. In 1853, the town was named Olympia, after the Olympic Mountains which were northwest of the town.
