The county seat of Kittitas Couinty, Washington is Ellensburg, just east of the Cascade mountain range. When Civil War veteran John Alden Shoudy came to the area in 1871, he bought a trading post and called it “Robber’s Roost.” Along with that purchase, he bought 160 acres of land. He started the first post office in 1873 and platted the town, which he named Ellensburgh in honor of his wife, Mary Ellen Shoudy. The final “H” in the town name was dropped in 1894 at the insistence of the US Postal Service. In 1889, the Washington State Normal School was opened in Ellensburg. It is now known as Central Washington University.
