The county seat of Stevens county is Colville, Washington. In 1825, Fort Colville was established just west of what is now Colville. The fort was named in honor of a London governor of Hudson’s Bay Company Lord Andrew Colville. A site of commerce for fur traders and such, Fort Colville was the center of trade in America’s Northwest. The old fort was covered by water as part of the Coulee Dam National Recreation Area by Lake Roosevelt. In 1853, Hudson’s Bay pulled out of what had become an American territory and moved to Canada. The town of Colville was founded in 1882 after the fort was abandoned.
