The State of Washington was part of the Washington Territory, was the site of the 1847 Whitman massacre which triggered the Cayuse War, which lasted form 1847 until 1855. Named in honor of America's first President, Washington is the only state to be named for a U.S. President. It joined the Union in 1889.
