The town of Vienna is situated in Fairfax County, Virginia. Colonel Charles Broadwater settled in the town in 1754, and John Hunter, his son-in-law who was born in Ayr, Scotland, built the first house there in 1767. Shortly after that, the name of the village was Ayr Hill. It remained the name of the town until the 1850s when Dr. William Hendrick from Vienna, New York moved to town, after making it a condition of his move there. Early in the American Civil War, Vienna was the site of one of the earliest skirmishes of the war, the Battle of Vienna. The Union Army unit, led by General Robert Schenck, set out to occupy the area but was ambushed by the Confederate Army unit commanded by Colonel Maxcy Gregg.
