The town of Rocky Mount, the county seat of Franklin County, Virginia, is part of the Roanoke Region. When the first colonists from England got to the shores of America in 1760, they named Rocky Mount because of a steep cliff nearby. They named the adjacent village Mount Pleasant. Rocky Mount annexed the smaller town of Mount Pleasant in 1873 and was incorporated that same year.
