The independent city of Newport News in Virginia was established and known as Elizabeth Cittie, and in 1634, Newport News became part of Warwick River Shire, which, in 1637 became Warwick County. Prior to the Civil War, Newport News was a small fishing village and rural home to plantations. After the war, with the construction of the railroads and a shipyard locally, the population began to boom. The City of Newport was established during Reconstruction by a merchant from California named Collis P. Huntington, who was high up in the Central Pacific Railroad. Huntington Park, at the base of Newport News, is named after him.
