The town of Marion, Virginia, is in Smyth County, where it is the county seat. The town is named in honor of Francis Marion, also known as the Swamp Fox, who served in the military during the American Revolution. Marion is considered to be one of the fathers of modern guerrilla warfare and is also in the lineage of the United States Army Rangers.
