The independent city of Lexington, Virginia is the county seat of Rockbridge County. Settled in 1777, it is the home to Virginia Military Institute as well as Washington and Lee University. It was named in 1778, the first of numerous places named in honor of Lexington, Massachusetts, which is famous for “The Shot Heard Round the World” during the Battle of Concord and Lexington, which marked the beginning of the American Revolution. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are both buried in Lexington.
