The independent city of Fredericksburg, Virginia was a prominent port when Virginia was a colony. It is located 50 miles south of Washington, D.C. and 57 miles north of Richmond, Virginia, which put it right in the middle of the capitals of the Union and the Confederacy and was the reason for the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Second Battle of Fredericksburg during that war.
