The City of Falls Church, Virginia is an independent city, which is named for the 18th century Anglican parish which was in that location.The parish was originally called William Gunnell’s Church, and it was built in 1733. Both George Washington and George Mason were vestrymen in that church. It became a town in Fairfax County in 1875, and remained such until 1948, when it was incorporated as an independent city which is at the same level as counties in Virginia.
