Located on Chincoteague Island, the town of Chincoteague is in Accomack County, Virginia. In 1650, the first land grant on Chincoteague Island was given; by 1672 there were several large farms; and by 1838. The town grew slowly, and in 1861, the vote was 132 to 2 to not secede from the Union. The name of the town is the Anglicization of “gingoteague,” which was the Indian name for the island. The Great March Storm of 1962, also sometimes called the Ash Wednesday Storm, raged in the mid-Atlantic states from March 6 through March 8, 1962 left Chincoteague underwater, with more than six feet of water covering much of Main Street.
