In August of 1763, a land grant was given to Jesse Hallock and 64 others by Governor Bnning Wentworth, who named the land Shelburne, in honor of William Petty, the Second Earl of Shelburne. The town of Shelburne, Vermont is in Chittenden County, Vermont, on the banks of Lake Champlain. It was primarily an agricultural area until the establishment of a shipyard at Shelburne Harbor. That shipyard launched its first ship in 1825, and numerous others before the launch of the Ticondroga in 1906.
