The capital of Vermont, Montpelier, is also the county seat, or as New Englanders call it, the shire town, of Washington County. The first settlement was started when General Parley Davis and Colonel Jacob Davis, both of Charlton, Massachusetts, arrived to survey and clear the land. Colonel Davis chose the name, which is meant to honor the city of Montpellier in France.
