The town of Killington, Vermont is situated in Rutland County. Chartered in 1761, it was first called Killington, but in 1800, its name was officially changed to Sherburne, in honor of land owner Colonel Benjamin Sherburne. In later days, the Killington Resort, a ski resort, became wildly popular and was the main reason people came to Sherburne. Most visitors there, in fact, called the town Killington. In 1999, the town’s residents voted to change the name of the town back to Killington.
