Bennington, Vermont is a co-shire town (or county seat) of Bennington County with the town of Manchester. Bennington was chartered by virtue of a New Hampshire Grant on January 3, 1749. It was named in honor of the provincial governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth, who bestowed the grant upon 62 residents of New Hampshire. It was settled in 1761 by four families who were led to the area by French and Indian War veteran Captain Samuel Robinson. It was the site of the Battle of Bennington, which was fought during the American Revolution. In 1891, the 306 foot tall Bennington Battle Monument opened, and it remains the tallest man-made structure in Vermont.
