Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah and the county seat of Salt Lake County. It was founded in 1847 by a group of Latter Day Saints, or Mormons, led by Brigham Young and was named for the Great Salt Lake City. The word “Great” was omitted in 1868 for the Great Salt Lake which is nearby.
