Davis County, Utah is the location of the city of Layton. It was settled in the 1850s and was made famous for the 1884 United States Supreme Court case of Linford versus Ellison, which was brought before them with the claim that while the settlement was included in the city boundaries of Kaysville, their property taxes were not privy to municipal services. They won the case and became an independent unincorporated area in 1902. It was incorporated as a town in 1920. The city is named in honor of Mormon colonizer Christopher Layton.
