Situated 20 miles south of the capital of the state of Utah, the city of Draper is in both Salt Lake and Utah Counties, equidistant to Salt Lake City and Provo and is the site of the Utah State Prison, which is famous for being the execution place of Gary Gilmore in 1977. Settled in 1849 by Ebenezer Brown, who brought cattle to to the area and sold the cattle and meat to those who were headed to California to get rich in the Gold Rush. Ebenezer’s brother-in-law by virtue of being his wife Phoebe’s brother, moved to the settlement along with his wife the same year. The town was named in honor of the couple, Dr. William Draper III and his wife Elizabeth who birthed the children born there. The City of Draper was incorporated in 1978.
