The Utah city of American Fork is situated in Utah County at the foot of Mount Timpanogos. Settled by Mormon pioneers in 1852, it was incorporated as Lake City, people settled along the banks of the American Fork River. Tensions ran high in the 1850s among the natives and the settlers, and in 1853, the settlers moved into a fort which was built specifically for that purpose. The citizens of the settlement founded the first public school in the territory. The name of the settlement was changed to its current iteration in 1860 in order to stop being confused with Salt Lake City.
