The community of Winnie, Texas, is in Chambers County. It was platted in 1895 by the Gulf and Inter-state Railway. It was named in honor of Fox Winnie, a contractor who worked for the railway. In 1911, the Winnie and Loan Improvement Company put lots on the market, but sales were slow, and the company failed shortly afterwards. huge hurricane and declines in rice prices all but stopped local agriculture, and all efforts to promote vegetables and fruits in the area failed, with the notable exception to figs. Figs were the only crop which was successful, but even that died around 1920. In 1941, oil was discovered in Winnie, and oil and gas explorations in the next few decades prompted population growth. Winnie has co-hosted the annual Texas Rice Festival since 1970.
