Victoria, Texas is the county seat of Victoria County and is named in honor of General Guadalupe Victoria, who was the first president of Mexico. Victoria began as a Mexican settlement and got its first post office in 1846. That same year, an epidemic of cholera broke out in the town. In 1861, the San Antonio and Mexican Gulf reached Victoria, but during the Civil War in 1863, it was destroyed. It was rebuiilt by the Union Army in 1866. In 1871, it became part of the Gulf, Western Texas and Pacific Railway.
