Seguin, Texas is the county seat of Guadalupe County and is one of the oldest towns in the state, having been founded just over a year after the Texas Revolution. It was where the Texas Rangers were established, and the home of the most famous Ranger of all, Captain John C. Hays. It was also home to Dr. John Park, who pioneered the use of concrete made from materials found locally, hence more than 100 buildings in town were made of concrete; twenty of them still stand. Around the time of the American Civil War, the town was agricultural in nature, with farm crops including peanuts, cotton, and corn as well as raising hogs and cattle. In 1876, the railroad arrived, and with it, equipment for brick-making and cheap lumber. The town has five brickworks around the turn of the century, and in the late 1920s, oil was discovered fifteen miles east of town.
