San Marcos is the county seat of Hays County, Texas on the banks of the San Marcos River. Spanish colonization was attempted several times beginning 1755 with the establishment of the San Xavier missions and the presidio of San Francisco Xavier and ending with the abandonment in 1812 after floods and Indian raids. In the mid-1800s, William Moon began a settlement in what is now the city of San Marcos. Former members of John C. Hays’s company of Texas Rangers and Texas Revolution hero General Edward Burleson joined the settlement, along with others. In 1849, General Burleson built a dam which powered numerous mills, and still powers the remaining ones. The International-Great Northern Railroad arrived in 1881, making San Marcos an important cattle and cotton hub.
