Hidalgo County is home to the city of Pharr, Texas, which is connected to the city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas in Mexico, by an international bridge. Named in honor of Henry Newton Pharr, a sugar farmer and former president of the Louisiana - Rio Grande Sugar Company. He also owned 8,000 acres of land in the settlement.
