Pearland, Texas is in Brazoria County with small areas of the city in Fort Bend and Harris Counties. The city started out as the location of a railroad siding switch on the Guld, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway in 1882. When the post office was established in 1893, it was named Mark Belt, but it was changed to Pear Land later that year when numerous pear trees were noticed. The Galveston hurricanes of 1900 and 1915 uprooted most of the fruit trees. Oil was discovered in 1934.
